How Does IV Sedation Dentistry Work?
Dental IV sedation is the deepest form of conscious sedation that we provide in our dental offices. It causes a ‘twilight’ state where you may remain awake but very carefree, or, more likely, you may fall asleep. Either way, you won’t remember much (if anything) about the procedure after the sedation wears off. During your appointment, your IV sedation dentist will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, and can adjust your sedation dosage or reverse it entirely at any point to ensure that you remain safe and comfortable. You’ll still receive a local anesthetic to numb the area where your dentist will be working, but this will be delivered after you have received sedation.
Before you undergo IV sedation dentistry, we’ll have a consultation with you to discuss your health history and provide instructions. In most cases, we’ll ask that you not eat or drink anything for several hours before your appointment. Most medications are safe to continue, though we may ask that you avoid taking blood thinners in the leadup to your sedated dental work.
