Invisalign® vs. Traditional Braces: Which Are Right for You?

If your teeth need to be straightened, you’ve probably begun researching treatment options and discovered that there’s an alternative to traditional braces known as Invisalign. While Invisalign is an excellent choice for many people, it’s not right for everyone, and it’s important to explore the pros and cons of each treatment approach before choosing one.

Braces vs. Invisalign: What’s the Difference?

Before delving into which treatment option is right for your needs, it may be helpful to first explain what the difference is between Invisalign and traditional braces. While braces use metal brackets and wires to shift teeth into place, Invisalign instead uses a series of clear, custom-fitted plastic aligners (often referred to as “trays” or “retainers”). A patient wears each aligner for approximately two weeks before switching to the next one in the series.

Invisalign vs. Braces: Questions to Ask Yourself

Only a trained dental provider can determine whether you’re a better candidate for Invisalign or traditional braces. With that said, asking yourself the following questions may help you decide which course of treatment you’d prefer:

  • How complex is your problem? Invisalign can be used to treat a wide array of orthodontic issues, including crossbites, crowded teeth, gapped teeth, open bites, overbites, and underbites. But if your problem is more complex, then you may be better suited for traditional braces.
  • What are your hobbies? One of the main advantages that Invisalign offers over traditional braces is that the aligners can be removed when needed. So, if you’re an athlete or play a wind instrument, you may want to opt for Invisalign.
  • How disciplined are you? Although Invisalign aligners are removable, it’s important that they be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours each day—failing to do so could significantly extend the treatment timeline. Invisalign aligners also need to be thoroughly cleaned each night to avoid staining, odors, and germs. So, if you think you’ll have trouble adhering to those rules, you might want to choose traditional braces instead.
  • Do you smoke? Given the wide range of health problems that cigarettes can cause, it’s a good idea to quit smoking no matter what type of dental treatment you choose. With that said, if you don’t think you’ll be able to abstain from cigarettes throughout the entire length of your treatment, you may want to go with traditional braces, since nicotine can stain the Invisalign aligners.
