PERIODONTAL TREATMENTS AT OUR PRACTICE
There is still no cure for gum disease but there are several ways to prevent an infection from destroying the gum tissue and bone. Prevention is critical for keeping your gums in good health but we do offer several treatment options if gingivitis has developed into periodontal disease. Burns Dentistry performs many periodontal treatments and procedures at our practice, including:
GUM DISEASE THERAPY
- Scaling – to remove hardened plaque from below the gum line.
- Root Planing – to reduce rough areas on teeth roots.
- Antibiotic Therapy – to battle infection.
- Laser Treatment – to remove bacteria and promote gum reattachment.
SCALING AND ROOT PLANING
Scaling and root planing, is a procedure involving removal of dental plaque and calculus and then smoothing, or planing, of the exposed surface of the roots, removing cementum or dentine that is impregnated with calculus, toxins, or microorganisms that cause inflammation.
SOFT TISSUE RECONTOURING
The gums are an essential part of your smile. If your gums are puffy and unhealthy, or do not accentuate the shape of your teeth, soft tissue recontouring can be used to adjust the appearance of the gumline, and provide you with a better looking smile.
Periodontal maintenance (PM) is distinctly different than prophy and is most commonly utilized for patients who have had active perio treatment. It is ongoing treatment for periodontitis, which is a chronic and non-curable bacterial infection. The objective of PM is to keep the disease under control.
