What Are Cosmetic Veneers
Previously, veneers were common for discolored smiles. Though that remains a popular reason to opt for dental veneers, your dentist may recommend dental veneers to correct several other types of smile imperfections. We may suggest veneers to:
- Close large spaces and gaps between teeth
- Whiten teeth that are severely stained or discolored
- Improve the appearance of irregularly shaped teeth
- Correct slightly crooked teeth
- Restore teeth that are broken, chipped, worn, or fractured
Porcelain veneers are an excellent choice for enhancing your smile because the color and translucence of porcelain is a great match for the natural appearance of
tooth enamel and won’t stand out from your other teeth. Porcelain is stain resistant as well so your smile will stay bright for years to come.
Resin veneers can also be matched to your natural tooth color. With dental veneers, you can achieve a beautiful, natural-looking smile that you will love to show off. Our dentists may recommend dental veneers if you would like to improve the appearance of your smile. We strive to provide you with the best porcelain veneers Sun City West has to offer by custom making it for just one tooth or for your entire smile.
Process Of Creating Cosmetic Veneer
The process of creating your perfect cosmetic veneer starts with your Sun City dentist taking x-rays of your mouth to evaluate the general health of your other teeth
and look for signs of wearing enamel, tooth decay or gum disease. Next, your teeth are primed for the veneer to be applied. Using local anaesthetic for your comfort, a small portion of enamel (around 1mm) is filed down where the veneer will be applied. This is done to ensure the texture of the teeth remains smooth, increasing the aesthetics of your smile.
Next, the shade of color that matches your tooth or teeth will be carefully selected. If your smile is currently not evenly shaded, not to worry. Your dentists will consider this and craft your porcelain veneers accordingly. It is not uncommon to have different shades to match different portions of the veneer. Your dentist will then take an impression of your mouth so the lab technician has a working model of your teeth and gums to craft your veneer to fit perfectly. Impressions can be made with the aid of a thick putty like substance which you bite down on for a few minutes and is then removed to create a mold which is sent to the lab.
The veneer usually takes around 1-2 weeks to arrive. In this time, you may receive a temporary veneer. Candidates for temporary veneers include people who are having veneers placed on a single tooth or front-located tooth where the appearance of a tooth with enamel missing is very obvious. These can be either cemented or clip-on pieces that are worn until the permanent dental veneers are ready.
Most people will not require a temporary veneer, however, and will receive their veneer after about 2 weeks of creating the initial impression. During this period, there may be increased sensitivity to temperature since there is a small amount of protective enamel missing from the tooth so your dentist will advise you on precautions to reduce potential discomfort during that time.
What Happens After?
After receiving the dental veneer, your Sun City dentist will check to see how well it fits you and trim and make adjustments as necessary.
Once you both are satisfied with the size, shape, color and fit considering your gum line, the veneer will be cemented into place using a shade that blends in with the color of your tooth or teeth. Once it is bonded in place, the process is complete and you are now the proud owner of beautiful porcelain veneers. You will be advised to come for follow up after placing your veneer, usually about 7 to 10 days later. This is to check how your gums have adjusted to the veneer and ensure there is no discomfort.
If necessary, the shape and size can be adjusted some more at this stage. Caring for your veneer is essential as a porcelain veneer can last as long as 10-15 years with proper maintenance. It is advisable to brush at least twice a day and floss daily. Just as with teeth, veneers can also have a buildup of bacteria and plaque from the food and drink it is exposed to. To prevent accumulation of unwanted materials, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene.
